Finally, food is bound to be on the minds of the kids as well as the parents during a road trip.  Keeping snacks handy in the car and preparing healthy lunches ahead of time can help the family avoid expensive restaurants.  Cut down on costs by packing water and juice as well.

Evolution Of Transportation

Transportation refers to movement of goods and people from one place to another. In pre-historic times, primitive man used to travel by foot. Man learned the art of domesticating animals, this led to further evolution. After few decades, the Stone Age man started using animals for transport. Horses, mules, donkeys and elephants were commonly used Stone Age man. Invention of wheel bought a massive change in the way one traversed. Wheel bought about the changes and the speed that primitive man could not have imagined. Bullock carts were the first form of transport with wheels, once the primitive man realized that comfort and the speed in which he could travel, he started looking for other means of transport.

Slowly man realized that he could also use horse drawn carts and carriages for better speed. Tiny seats were placed on elephants and the kings and the royal men would travel on them. Ladies would travel in palanquin which was carried by about 4 people. Palanquin is a small box shaped place which is supported by one or two poles. A person can sit comfortably in these palanquins. The earlier bullock carts and horse drive carts were open, however later man added enclosures to protect the travelers from heat and rain.

Gradually over a period of time, man realized the importance of fuels. The first steam engine invented by James watt, changed the world of transportation. The steam Engine was magnificent and unmatchable in terms of speed and comfort as compared to other modes of transportation. Slowly and gradually steam engine led to popularity of railways. The use of coal and steam was prominent in ships. Earlier people would swim across the river or travel in small boats as waterways. These small boats were not safe and were easy to be overturned in even the slightest of the wing or rough weather.

If you have older children, a great option for your family may be traveling for the holidays. For many adults, part of the fun of traveling is anticipating the trip- preparing and planning.  This can be true for children as well.  Getting your children involved in travel preparation builds excitement, gives control over an unfamiliar situation, and teaches a few life skills along the way.

Consider the children’s ages when determining when to share the news of your trip.

Children under four don’t understand time enough to appreciate travel that is weeks or months away.  Best to involve them in simple ways and in small bits; mention the trip in daily conversation, ask your child what they look forward to or note some of the planned activities.

For older children, give more lead-time and let them dictate how they’d like to prepare.  Maybe they would like to research your destination. Or count down on a calendar. Or think about what to pack.

Let the children pick some of the activities planned during the trip.

Even younger children can have input.  Everyone will be more eager to participate if they’ve had a chance to shape the undertaking.  Having everyone involved also teaches important negotiation skills.

Set the rules early.

Many times the rules go out the window during a family trip.  It is important to maintain some adherence to your at home expectations.  Lay it out plainly.  “Remember that at our house we do things this way.  Even though we are away from home, mom and dad’s rules still apply.”

Have plans but be flexible.

While you’ll want to have plans for the trip so that you can get the most out of it, be prepared to be flexible.  If the children are absorbed in an activity, don’t rush them off to the next thing.  If an activity doesn’t capture the kids’ interest, be prepared to move on.

The point is to have fun and spend time with your family- so be prepared to adjust.
