This may go against the preconceived notion of traveling light, but with children in the car, one cannot have enough items to occupy their minds.  Travel-sized games, books, and music are some of the best extras to have on board.  Packing to keep the peace is one of the smartest things a mom can do when taking her children on the road.

 

An easy way to leave prepared is by creating a “travel kit” for the little ones.  The kids can have fun collecting their favorite books for their very own carry-on.  Small stuffed animals, especially if the family is traveling at night, can be helpful.  Also, puzzle books, writing pads, or a small color kit can be helpful if the children are a bit older.  Keeping kids happy in the car is easier when they have their most cherished toys on board.

 

Convenience stores and regularly visited grocery stores provide a plethora of travel-sized games.  All the family favorites can be found, and kids can enjoy magnetic checkers, chess, and board games as well.  Ranging from classics to the most modern raves, mini games are available almost anywhere that their standard-sized counterparts are sold.

In addition, many parents revel in the peacefulness that a portable DVD player can provide.  Whether it is built in or one that utilizes the car’s energy and plugs in, these devices are becoming a must-have for parents.  Let’s face it:  most kids love movies.  Packing a small bag of the most-loved shows can ensure the kids are occupied for hours.  Especially handy for lengthy road trips, portable DVD players have excellent volume control for parents.

Not many families should attempt the last-minute road trip.  Especially with little ones in mind, moms and dads should take a considerable amount of time plotting rest stops, restaurants that are kid-friendly, and places for the children to relax and expel energy on the way.  Many parents do not consider that children have great difficulty sitting in the car for hours on end.  A detour to the park or museum can help the trip go much more smoothly.  Aside from pit stops, parents should consider the path of travel that can bring the least amount of holiday traffic, especially in the winter if outside play is not an option.   After all, in that case, the quickest trip is probably the best.

 

Travel At Night

Now that sounds interesting.  In fact, it might be the best option for your family.  Especially around the holidays, skipping naps and regular, healthy meals can make for cranky toddlers (and parents)!  If mom or dad can plan at least a few days in advance to double up on sleep, traveling at night can be one of the most peaceful ways to get the job done.  Not only can the children sleep the entire way, but there will be less holiday traffic at this time as well.  Hand Dad an extra cup of coffee, and he may be able to drive all night!

Traveling with the Family

When you have children of different ages you may wonder where you should go for a family vacation. Your youngest children may be too young to fully appreciate a vacation destination like Disney World or Epcot Center, while your oldest children may get bored if you stay close to home. This is one way to connect as you will be able to talk and hang out as a family as well as spending time apart doing the things that will interest you individually.
